San Diego's City Council has postponed a decision on the massive redevelopment project for the 49.2-acre sports arena property, pushing the vote on the Midway Rising deal to later this year. The delay means the council will not take up the proposed agreement for the site, which currently houses the Pechanga Arena, until a future meeting.
The project, led by a development team, aims to transform the aging arena and surrounding parking lots into a mixed-use neighborhood. Plans include a new entertainment venue, thousands of housing units, retail space, and public parks. The deal has been a subject of intense negotiation, with city officials and the developer working to finalize terms related to affordable housing requirements, community benefits, and financial contributions.
Councilmembers cited the need for more time to review the complex agreement and address lingering questions from the public and stakeholders. The delay allows for additional community input and further analysis of the project's impact on the surrounding Midway District. No new date for the vote has been set, but city staff indicated they expect to bring the proposal back for a council hearing within the next few months.
