A few years ago, Bill Pulte, the newly appointed acting director of U.S. intelligence, was locked in a bitter legal dispute over control of his family's homebuilding empire. Now, he is tasked with overseeing the nation's spy agencies.
Pulte, 36, made his fortune in real estate, but his path to the top of the intelligence community has been anything but traditional. He is best known for his aggressive online presence, where he has built a following by giving away cash to strangers on social media. That persona, however, contrasts sharply with the legal battles that have defined his business career.
In 2020, Pulte sued his own father and uncle, alleging they mismanaged the family's homebuilding company, PulteGroup, and tried to cut him out of the business. The dispute dragged on for years, with Pulte accusing his relatives of "self-dealing" and "waste of corporate assets." The case was eventually settled out of court, but it revealed a family rift that played out in public court filings.
Now, President Trump has placed Pulte in charge of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, a role that coordinates the CIA, NSA, and other spy agencies. Critics question whether a real estate heir with no prior government experience is qualified to handle the nation's most sensitive secrets. Supporters argue that Pulte's business acumen and outsider status will bring a fresh perspective to a bureaucracy they view as bloated.
Pulte has not commented on his new role beyond a brief statement thanking the president. His appointment is temporary, pending a permanent nominee. But for now, the man who made millions building houses is responsible for protecting the country from its most complex threats.
