A real estate company that offered homeowners cash in exchange for a promise to use its services when they eventually sold their homes has been ordered to pay $1 million in restitution to hundreds of Georgia residents. The firm, MV Realty, has also been banned from operating in the state.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr made the announcement on Monday. The case centers on agreements where the company gave homeowners small upfront payments, sometimes just a few hundred dollars. In return, the homeowners signed a 40-year contract that gave MV Realty the exclusive right to list their property when it was sold. If the homeowner tried to break the contract, they faced a costly penalty.
State officials argued that these agreements were misleading and unfair. Many homeowners did not fully understand the long-term commitment or the financial consequences of the fine print. The investigation found that the company targeted vulnerable people, including the elderly and those in financial distress.
As part of the settlement, MV Realty must pay restitution to the affected homeowners. The company is also permanently barred from doing business in Georgia. The attorney general's office said the case serves as a warning to other companies that try to take advantage of homeowners with hidden fees and long-term obligations.
