Luzerne County's administration has put forward a plan to raise real estate taxes by 1.99% in 2027. The proposal points to several cost pressures driving the increase, including previously negotiated wage commitments, the needs of the court system, and ongoing infrastructure demands.
The wage agreements, reached through collective bargaining, lock in pay raises that the county must fund regardless of other budget conditions. Court operations also require steady financial support, covering personnel, facilities, and mandated services that cannot be deferred. Infrastructure needs add another layer, as roads, bridges, and county buildings require maintenance and upgrades to remain functional and safe.
Officials describe the tax increase as modest compared to the rising expenses the county faces. A 1.99% bump translates to a small annual increase for the average homeowner, though any change in property taxes draws attention from residents already managing higher costs for food, utilities, and insurance.
The proposal now moves through the budget review process, where county council members will examine the numbers, question department heads, and consider alternatives such as spending cuts or dipping into reserves. Public input will also play a role before any final vote.
If approved, the increase would take effect in 2027. County leaders say the revenue is needed to maintain services residents depend on, while critics argue the county should tighten its belt before asking taxpayers for more. The debate is expected to continue in the coming months.
