In a significant shift for real estate professionals across multiple states, Midwest Real Estate Data (MRED) has voted to eliminate its requirement that agents must be members of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) to access its listing service. The change, approved by the MRED Board of Managers, will allow its partner associations the option to grant Multiple Listing Service (MLS) access to licensed real estate agents who are not Realtors.
This policy revision marks a notable departure from the long-standing industry norm where MLS access was typically bundled with mandatory membership in a Realtor association. The decision provides local partner groups with greater flexibility in how they structure membership and could potentially lower barriers to entry for agents by separating the cost of MLS access from association dues.
The move follows increased scrutiny and legal challenges surrounding NAR rules and their influence on agent commissions and marketplace access. While MRED's change is not a full mandate for its partners, it empowers local boards to make their own decisions regarding membership requirements. This could lead to a more varied landscape for real estate professionals in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana, the core regions served by MRED's platform. The shift is seen as a direct response to evolving market pressures and demands for greater choice within the industry.
